Texas Association of County Election Officials Issues Statement on New Texas Secretary of State
AUSTIN, TX – The Texas Association of County Election Officials (TACEO), which represents county election officials across Texas’ 254 counties, issued the following statement today after Governor Greg Abbott appointed Robert Howden to serve as the 116th Texas Secretary of State:
"We congratulate Robert Howden on his appointment as the next Texas Secretary of State – a position which carries the tremendous responsibility of fostering trust in Texas’ election system by providing clear and consistent guidance to the county officials who maintain the integrity of the most important institution in our democracy,” said TACEO President Kristin Miles, Bastrop County Elections Administrator. “Texas voters deserve an election process built on clear, transparent communication – both between our members and the Secretary of State's office and, most importantly, directly with voters themselves. Election officials in all 254 Texas counties know firsthand what it takes to get this process right. It will be critical for Secretary Howden to help maintain that trust through the upcoming November General Election in Texas, and we stand ready to be a resource and a partner to the new Secretary from day one. When county election officials and the SOS work together to keep the public informed on the election process, all Texas voters will be able to cast a ballot with confidence.”
"No one fully understands what it takes to run an election until they've done it, and we want to do our part to help the new Secretary get up to speed quickly," said Chris McGinn, TACEO Executive Director. "That means close coordination on how state law and current court orders are implemented, so that our members can operate with consistent guidance, continue to do their jobs and meet key deadlines, and carry out secure elections for the people of Texas.”
